Hotel Lion d'Or — dark blue attic room with a sloping wall, a bed with leather headboard cushions and a walnut desk

Project

Hotel Lion d’Or, one of Haarlem's historic hotels and directly opposite the central station, dates back to the nineteenth century and, after being taken over by Marcel and Lilly Berendsen in 2016, was renewed step by step into a contemporary city hotel. For this renewal, we delivered the bespoke interior for the hotel rooms, as one continuous project in which the room concept was rolled out further through the hotel in phases.

Approach

For every hotel room, we delivered a coherent package of bespoke work. Desks, wardrobes, bedside tables, TV panels, upholstered headboards and bathroom furniture were technically engineered, produced and then installed on site, room by room.

The work was carried out in phases. That allowed new parts of the hotel to be renewed each time while keeping the same language of materials and details. In later phases, existing elements from the first round were also adapted and further refined.

Detail

The rooms are characterised by a combination of warm wood tones, black metal accents and leather headboards. The headboards use characterful brown leather in which natural scars were deliberately left visible, giving each piece its own look.

The furniture, too, is designed explicitly as one family. The desks, wardrobes and bedside tables share the same materials and dark steel details, while in the bathroom dedicated bespoke work was combined with integrated washbasins and space for services.
